Introduction

Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) is the largest and oldest agricultural university of Banglaseh. It was established on 18 August 1961 as the East Pakistan Agricultural University. After the independence of Bangladesh, it was renamed as Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1972. BAU offers Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degree in different fields of agriculture.

The University is located 4 kilometers south of the Mymensingh District town --on the bank of the river Old Brahamputra. The total area of the university is about 1200 Acres.


Adinistrative Structure and Academic Departments:
At present it has six faculties and 41 academic departments. The faculties are:
1. Faculty of Agriculture
2. Faculty of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology
3. Faculty of Agicultural Engineering and Technology
4. Faculty of Animal Husbandry
5. Faculty of Fisheries, and
6. Faculty of Veterinary Sciences.

In addition, it has three other vital components:
Graduate Training Institute (GTI),
Committee for Advance Studies and Research (CASR), and
Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System (BAURES).

The distribution of different academic departments among various faculties are as follows: Faculty of Agriculture has 15 academic departments while the Faculty of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology has 5 departments. Faculty of Agri-Engineering & Technology is composed of 4 departments while Animal Husbandry has 5 departments. Faculty of Fisheries Science has 4 departments and the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences has 8 departments under its jurisdictions.

Mandates and Achievements of the University:
BAU has the mandate of teaching, research and extension. These mandates are carried out by the university staffs, and students. The faculties are responsible for offering Bachelors degrees while the academic departments offers Masteral and Doctoral degrees. BAURES coordinates the research conducted by the students and teachers of the university. The extension projects are handled by the BAUEC. On the other hand, GTI coordinates the graduate training programmes. The total academic staffs number is 394. The university has so far produced 12,028 graduates, 3,508 postgraduates (M.Sc./M.S.) and 44 Ph.D. It has also conducted 296 training (short term pre-service and in-service) courses, including 14 international courses through the Graduate Training Institute.

Currently, BAURES is supervising about 90 different research projects while BAUEC is operating extension programmes in 22 villages of Mymensingh Sadar thana.
